Big Changes in the Garden

Our Garden Learning Centre was delivered to us at the end of last week - two kit homes that will be converted into one learning centre. Our students were very interested in watching delivery and installation! There is still a lot to be done inside the buildings to convert them, but the finished product will make a huge difference to our garden classes.

Work also continued on our pizza oven - we are already imagining sitting outside our Learning Centre enjoying delicious pizzas cooked in our wood fired oven!

This week we repeated our recent menu again:
Kashmiri Vegetable Curry
Chinese Rice
Pizza of the Imagination
Spinach and Pumpkin Salad
Mini Frittatas

Next week is our last week of term. We will be cooking:
Pizza of the Imagination
Tomato and Potato Curry
Curried Eggs
Moroccan Chickpea and Quinoa Salad
Orange and Beetroot Salad

Our chicks continue to thrive in their home in an apple crate in the bike shed. Students are enjoying taking on the tasks of caring for them.

Chickens

We repeated last week's menu this week (and will do so again next week) as we have quite a few staff changes. So we cooked:

Mini Frittatas
Kashmiri Vegetable Curry
Spinach and Pumpkin Salad
Chinese Rice
Pizza of the Imagination

Students have selected quite different vegetables for the curry, frittatas, pizza and rice dishes so although the menu is a repeat, it has in fact varied  quite considerably.

The chicks have moved out into the bike shed. Craig did a fantastic job converting an apple crate into a brooder.

A Harvest of Mushrooms!

Ellen's grandmother gave us 5 bags of mushroom compost!

Thomaz was very excited to be able harvest mushrooms

We used the mushrooms in our pizza this week

Jack was on maintenance duty this week and did a great job sweeping up the paths

Thomaz worked hard in the garden this week transporting sacks of compost
Jordan saved coriander seeds
We made mini frittatas this week

Jacob fries chilli and ginger as part of the Kashmiri Vegetable Curry recips

Ellen grated carrots for the Chinese rice

Ryan grated vegetables for the frittatas

Shannon got ready to cook the Chinese rice

Amelia had a taste of the vegetables

Tom supervised the chopping of vegetables for the frittata

Jordan helped with chopping capsicum for the Chinese rice

Jo added stock to the Kashmiri vegetable curry

Rochelle rolled out the pizza dough

Pizza group busy at work

Our chicks have grown so much - they now have some of their 'proper' feathers

Jamie loved watching the chicks this week

Snuggled up under the lamp

The black chicks are getting a lighter stripe on their new feathers

Jamie was very gentle with the chicks

This week we made:

Kashmiri Vegetable Curry
Pizza of the Imagination
Chinese Rice
Spinach and Pumpkin Salad
Mini Frittatas

We returned to some tried and tested favourites this week - the mini frittatas disappeared as soon as they get to the table and the pizza followed quickly afterwards! The rice, curry and salad dishes were very popular too.

Our chicks have grown so much this week - they already have some of their adult feathers! Next week they will move to the bike shed and live in an apple crate before moving into the chicken house next term.

A big thank you and well done to Jane who replaced Wendy on Tuesday and Wednesday and to Tracey who replaced her on Thursday and then especial thanks to them both for running the whole program on Friday. It is really great to see how so many of our staff are now involved in the actual running of the program.

Jane and Tracey will also be running the program on Thursday and Friday next week when Wendy and I are doing some professional development.

I have decided to keep the same menu as above running for the next two weeks because of all the staffing changes that are occuring. I'm sure our students won't complain!!!
